Dixie Conquest AR
SPORT 4 Hour and ELITE 10 Hour Adventure Race
Thank you to everyone for coming out to the 2013 Dixie Conquest AR at our beautiful new venue in the Bayard Conservation Area. We are already looking forward to coming back next year.
The weather did not want to cooperate early on as the temperature dropped for race day and decided to dump down rain on us. The Elite teams felt the cold in the morning specifically on the water where many racers came out of their boats shivering pretty bad. The water was pretty choppy too. One racer compared it to bull riding when describing how much fun he had.
Luckily the rain stopped prior to the Sport race and the water didn't get too much worse as day went on. It turned out to be a pretty decent day when it was all said and done and both races were greatly competitive.
This course had a new wrinkle with the Observation Tower Team Exercise. If you weren't there, six CPs were spread out 360 degrees around an observation tower. Elite teams needed to find and punch four of them while the Sport teams were responsible for three. The CPs were fairly easy to spot from the tower but were hardly visible on land.
Many different strategies were used but basically at least one team member stood high above their teammate(s) in the tower and tried to direct them to the controls. It was fun to witness and we hope you guys had fun completing it. One person compared it to a warped marriage counseling exercise.
If you liked that little twist and the course as a whole, then thank
Jeff Leininger and
Bruce Meier for scouting, creating, and setting the course. Jeff always likes to add a creative new element to his races and we thought the observation tower part was a pretty fun idea.
