Mia's Misfits: Adventure Racing for Awareness

Team known as Mixed Nuts had enough and were wondering why they had to say that stupid name out-loud every time they showed up to an event.

Eventually they promised us they they would have a new name the next time they saw us and that's exactly what they did.

Reemerging as Mia's Misfits, this time they made it count. The guys wrote us a quick note about their new team name that we have posted below.

The name Mia’s Misfits comes from a little 8 year old girl, Mia-Layne Faith Murrill. She is the daughter of Andrea Murrill, granddaughter of Lynn and Ben Chancey. Mia was born December 15, 2005 with Down Syndrome and a congenital heart defect. She spent 14 days in Shands NICU. Three months later she had open heart surgery. With God’s blessing she came home in six days. Mia is a very energetic little girl, who is growing, thriving and does not meet a stranger. She is in the first grade and loves school. We are members of the Down Syndrome Association of Tallahassee. The DSAT is a very special group of people who provide educational, emotional support and resources to individuals with Down Syndrome and their families. They also strive to build public awareness and acceptance of the abilities of individuals with Down Syndrome.

A small group of friends began adventure racing a little over a year ago. When picking a name for our team, we thought of every name in the book. Then one person asked, the name of our team that attends the Buddy Walk with DSAT. Our Buddy Walk team name is Mia’s Misfits. Without a second thought everyone wanted to have Mia’s Misfits as our Adventure Racing name to show our support for Mia and DSAT. Naming our adventure racing team Mia’s Misfits shows our family how much support Mia and our family have from our friends. Also, thanks to DSAT for allowing our AR team to use the DSAT logo for awareness.

Team Mia’s Misfits is composed of the following Billy Jack Moat, Chad Adams, Ben Chancey, and Ben Herget for the shorter adventure races. For the Sea 2 Sea Adventure Race, Team Mia’s Misfits, will consist of Billy Jack Moat, Rick Bringger, Michael McHale and Ben Chancey.

UPDATE: The team successfully crossed the state at the 2014 Sea 2 Sea AR. They collected 15 CPs and finished in 52 hours and 23 minutes. A lot of lessons learned and they plan to be back and better next time around.

The team wants to thanks Firehouse Subs for sponsoring their adventure racing efforts now and in the future.
